Fanshawe, Pittock and Wildwood Conservation Areas

Parks, Recreation, and Natural Areas

Providing natural spaces and recreational opportunities

The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) owns and/or manages more than 5,790 ha (14,300 ac) of land within the Upper Thames River watershed, spread across some 40 properties. The UTRCA owns and conserves approximately 1.7% of the Upper Thames River watershed (342,063 ha), making the Conservation Authority one of the largest landowners in the watershed. The forests, wetlands, meadows, watercourses, and ponds within these properties are critically important for preserving and restoring the watershed’s ecological health, as well as providing opportunities for outdoor recreation and nature appreciation.

UTRCA properties vary in size and public access. The three large, multi-use Conservation Areas (Fanshawe, Pittock, and Wildwood) offer nightly camping, day-use access and a wide range of other facilities and activities. For seasonal camping information, please visit:

The UTRCA also owns and/or manages many other smaller, day-use conservation area and tracts that offer picnicking and short hiking trails. These smaller areas are managed primarily by local service clubs or municipalities and are open to the public free of charge. London’s Environmentally Significant Areas (ESAs) also offer hiking and nature appreciation. In addition, the UTRCA owns numerous other lands including wetlands, flood plains, and agricultural lands that have no access or limited access for hunting/fishing.

The UTRCA welcomes environmental research on most Authority properties. Researchers can contact the UTRCA for more information.
