London named one of Canada’s first Certified Bird Friendly Cities! (media release, May 13, 2021)

London, ON – London’s Bird Team is pleased to announce that the City of London recently became a Certified Bird Friendly City.

Nature Canada recently announced Canada’s first four certified Bird Friendly Cities – Vancouver, London, Toronto, and Calgary – for their efforts in protecting birds within their city boundaries.

Julie Read, London Bird Team member, said, “We are pleased to be one of the first cities in Canada to receive bird friendly certification! The dedicated partners and citizens of London are making a positive impact for this birding hub in Southwestern Ontario.”

Nature Canada’s criteria for certifying “Bird Friendly Cities” are designed to recognize and celebrate the efforts eligible municipalities are making to save bird lives within their communities. The certification provides local partners with a clear standard that reflects what a city needs to do to be safe for birds. Certification is a badge of honor and a source of community pride that tells the world that your city or town takes action to help birds and reverse their declines in your own backyard.

Nature Canada hopes to certify at least 30 more eligible Canadian municipalities as Bird Friendly Cities by World Migratory Bird Day 2022.
