Local author, Jon-Erik Lappano, joins UTRCA for outdoor events (UTRCA weekly, May 13, 2022)

The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) held Nature Nearby events in Mitchell and St. Marys on Saturday, May 7, featuring local author and Governor General Literary Award recipient, Jon-Erik Lappano. The inspiration for the Nature Nearby activities and inquiry-based explorations of the natural world came from Lappano’s latest book, Martin and the River, which features the North Thames River. Lappano jumped at the chance to take part in UTRCA’s family friendly programming.

“From a young age, I have found meaning and connection in nature, and I continue to have a curiosity and wonder for the world around me, which is reflected in my work as a writer. Martin and the River, specifically, is dedicated to the North Thames River, a natural space where I spent some of the fondest hours of my childhood,” said Lappano.

“We were so excited to have Jon-Erik join us! His story and connections within the watershed were a perfect fit for the Nature Nearby program,” said Maranda MacKean, UTRCA Community Education Specialist. “Children and parents alike were delighted to hear Jon-Erik read his story and share his experiences of growing up playing along the North Thames. He also participated with his family and others in the additional activities provided, staying for both programs in their entirety!”

The Rotary Clubs of Mitchell and St. Marys have been sponsoring Nature Nearby programs, enabling the UTRCA to provide these free events for families.
