UTRCA Concerned about Illegal ATV use in Ivey Tract (media release, March 13, 2024)

The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) is ramping up enforcement after numerous ATV users have been illegally accessing the Ivey Tract. The Ivey Tract, also known locally as the Putnam Tract, is a 112-ha property located on the South Thames River between Dorchester and Putnam. It is part of the Provincially Significant Wetland known as the Putnam Tract Swamp.

ATV use is strictly prohibited on all UTRCA properties. UTRCA staff have noticed extensive damage to the wetland. ATV’s have been able to access the property much earlier this year due to the lack of snow. As a result, increased enforcement efforts have been/will be undertaken in cooperation with the Middlesex OPP.

“Despite the signage and attempts to block off access by UTRCA staff, it appears a growing number of irresponsible ATV operators are opting to ignore these efforts and continue to damage the wetland to a point where the ecological damage may be irreversible. The Tract has a very diverse and sensitive set of species that are being significantly damaged by ATVs and allows invasive plant species like giant ragweed to flourish. This is especially concerning,” said Jason Belfry, UTRCA Land Management Supervisor.

The property was acquired by the UTRCA from the Ludlow family in 1978 with funding support from the Ivey Foundation through the Nature Conservancy of Canada.
