These environmental educational programs are available for secondary students at Fanshawe Conservation Area.
Note: All programs are a half day unless specified otherwise.

Exploring Ecosystems | Learn the ABC’s of ecology (abiotic, biotic, cultural/human influences) while exploring terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems along the Thames River. Through hands-on activities, students discover the interconnectedness and interactions of wildlife with its environment. Ecosystems are compared and succession highlighted as students move from one community to the next.

Advanced Orienteering | In this challenging session, students learn how to use a compass and plot their course with a set of bearings and distances. The program can be modified for students with little map and/or compass experience.

Amazing Race – GPS Style | Learn the basics of GPS technology and then apply the skills in a nature themed game of The Amazing Race! Using GPS units out on a set course, students are challenged to find answers to natural science questions and to locate specific eco-caches.

Climate Change – A Hot Issue! | Let’s clear the air around climate change. In the field and at the water’s edge, students will learn about the local impacts of climate change and explore the effects on wildlife survival. By collecting and analyzing weather and water quality data, as well as sampling terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates, students will be able to assess the impacts of climate change in their local ecosystem.

LEEDing the Way | LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a designation that recognizes the sustainability of buildings in respect to their design, construction, and operation. Join us for a tour of the UTRCA’s Watershed Conservation Centre to learn how this remarkable Platinum LEED building helps to conserve our natural resources and save money.
