Community Precipitation Monitoring Project

The UTRCA is working with watershed property owners to pilot a new Community Precipitation Monitoring Project. Participants will measure and record daily precipitation using the online Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS) platform. Check out the monitoring stations in the watershed!

CoCoRaHS is a community based, grassroots project that originated in Colorado in 1998. CoCoRaHS has grown to become a network of volunteers working to measure and map precipitation across North America.

The data collected will:

  • Enhance UTRCA’s water monitoring system and fill data gaps,
  • Improve our understanding of significant rain events and their distribution after they occur,
  • Improve our understanding of climate change trends over time,
  • Improve our understanding of drought,
  • Improve our understanding of snow distribution in the winter and spring,
  • Calibrate and verify our hydrology and water budget models, and
  • Support water-related education programs.
