Forecast Calling for a Rainy Weekend

Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety

Issued March 8, 2024 at 9 am; valid until March 12, 2024

Weather forecasts are predicting a low pressure system will enter the region today, bringing with it 20–40 mm of rain beginning Friday evening through Saturday.

The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) does not expect significant flooding at this time; however, water levels are expected to rise over the weekend and there is potential for flooding of low-lying areas that are typically prone to flooding. Water levels will remain elevated throughout this weekend and into early next week.

With students off for the March Break, parents and guardians are reminded to keep children and pets away from all watercourses. Banks adjacent to rivers and creeks are very slippery and, when combined with cold, fast-moving water, pose a serious hazard.  Standing water can also present dangers. Do not attempt to drive through flooded roadways.

It is not safe to take shelter along riverbanks or in low lying areas that are prone to flooding.

The UTRCA’s flood control reservoirs at Fanshawe, Wildwood, and Pittock Conservation Areas will be operated to reduce downstream flooding. UTRCA officials are monitoring the situation and will report on any changing conditions if necessary.
