Kintore Swamp

Creek running through forestThe Kintore Swamp is a high quality mixed deciduous-coniferous swamp in Oxford County. The UTRCA owns and protects 19 ha of this 110-ha Provincially Significant Wetland. Kintore Swamp is located at one of the headwaters of Nissouri Creek which drains to the Middle Thames River.

The organic soils in the swamp hold the moisture most of the year, keeping conditions cool and wet. Tree species include White Cedar, Black Ash, Yellow Birch, and Eastern Hemlock, with shrubs such as spicebush below. The understory is dominated by ferns, mosses, and wildflowers. Skunk Cabbage grows along the creek, indicating cool groundwater feeds the creek. The site is relatively undisturbed and in good condition with very few invasive species.

This swamp contributes to flood reduction, groundwater recharge, and water quality improvements. Cool wetlands reduce rates of snowmelt and rainfall runoff.
