UTRCA Out in the Community: Science Rendezvous and Emergency Preparedness Day
On May 9, UTRCA Education staff were out in force across London, connecting with the community at two exciting events happening simultaneously in the city.
At Western University, the UTRCA participated in Science Rendezvous — Canada's largest free science festival — featuring their Species at Risk turtle booth. The interactive station introduces visitors of all ages to the freshwater turtle species found in the Upper Thames watershed and the threats they face. Developed in partnership with Nature London, the booth sparked curiosity and conversation about local species, healthy habitats, and what we can all do to support a thriving watershed.
Meanwhile, UTRCA staff were also on hand at the City of London's Emergency Preparedness Day, where they engaged the public through a flood education booth featuring a floodplain simulator, a river safety puzzle, and information on why floods happen and how communities can stay safe and prepared. The booth provided a valuable opportunity to connect directly with Londoners about flood risk in the Upper Thames watershed and the work the UTRCA does to protect communities year-round.
Together, these two events reflect the UTRCA's ongoing commitment to community education — bringing watershed science and safety to life.
