Watercourses Responding to Snow Melt and Rain (flood bulletin, Dec 31, 2022-Jan 2, 2023)

WATERSHED CONDITIONS STATEMENT – WATER SAFETY

Issued December 31, 2022 at 3:10 pm; valid until January 2, 2023

Most of the snow on the ground has melted as of yesterday and is running off into water courses. The Upper Thames River watershed has received 15-30 mm of rain since last evening, which is further adding to runoff making its way to streams and rivers.

The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) expects water levels to peak in upstream areas (Mitchell, Woodstock) this evening, and move towards London in the early hours of tomorrow. Water levels will remain elevated over the remainder of the weekend and into next week. Serious flooding is not expected.

The UTRCA’s flood control reservoirs at Fanshawe, Wildwood, and Pittock Conservation Areas are being operated to reduce downstream flooding. UTRCA officials are monitoring the situation and will report on any changing conditions.

Residents are reminded to use extreme caution near all watercourses. With schools closed over the holiday period, caregivers are reminded to keep children and pets away from streams, rivers, ponds, and ditches.

Stream banks can be slippery and unstable and the water may be higher than normal and fast-moving. Any ice cover will be weakened and unstable. Flood control reservoirs are especially hazardous due to fluctuating water levels.
