Watershed Conditions Statement – Flood Outlook
2026 Flood Event #7, Bulletin Number 1 (Issued August 31, 2026, at 12:00 pm noon; valid until September 4, 2026, at 12:00 pm noon)
An average of approximately 150 mm of rain has been measured in the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) watershed over the past 30 days, with close to 275 mm measured in northern parts of the watershed. Many areas received around 50 mm in the past seven days, with some receiving up to 40 mm yesterday. As a result, the ground is close to being saturated which creates conditions where rapid runoff is more likely.
Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a Special Weather Statement this morning forecasting 30 – 50 mm more rain with the possibility of embedded thunderstorms, ending later this afternoon. The statement notes that rainfall warnings may be required. Some rain is forecast for each day through Thursday of this week.
Should this additional rainfall materialize, the UTRCA expects watercourse levels to rise across the watershed. Any areas that receive embedded thundershowers may see local flooding, with smaller watercourses spilling out of bank.
The UTRCA does not expect severe flooding at this time and is asking flood coordinators to be aware of the situation and monitor any known problem areas. Further updates will be provided, should the situation require it. The UTRCA will operate its flood control reservoirs at Fanshawe, Wildwood, and Pittock Conservation Areas to reduce downstream flooding.
The public is reminded to use extreme caution near all local waterways. Stream banks may be slippery and unstable, and the water is very fast-moving. Stay out of any flooded areas and do not drive through flooded roadways. Caregivers are reminded to keep children and pets away from watercourses. It is not safe to take shelter along riverbanks or in low lying areas that are prone to flooding.
