In-Class Programs

Our enthusiastic teachers can bring environmental programming to your school. This affordable option introduces relevant, local watershed issues to your students.

  • River Safety Education Program – Stay safe near rivers and streams! – grade 2 (March/April)
  • Stream of Dreams – all elementary grades (spring, fall)

Environmental Stewardship Programs

In spring and fall, students can participate in our tree planting projects. Occasionally, we also undertake bioengineering projects to stabilize stream banks. These hands-on experiences give students an opportunity to help the environment. Please contact Caroline Biel, Community Education Specialist, for more information or if you would like to be on a call-back list to get involved.

Harrington Mill Program

Grade 3 (spring, fall) – Join us at Harrington Conservation Area to learn about the history and importance of the Grist Mill. Students will learn how growing the “Three Sisters” – corn, beans and squash – supported the lives of the First Nation people and how they shared this knowledge with the early settlers. They will observe and experience how the process of milling corn evolved, from grinding with stones, to damming the creek and building the Grist Mill in 1846. A tour of the mill highlights why it was built here, how water power makes it work, and its vital role in the lives of area residents. Students will also identify aquatic life from Harrington Creek and learn how this can be used to determine water quality. Presented by the Harrington and Area Community Association and the UTRCA.
