Wildwood Schoolyard Outdoor School

Using the outdoors as the classroom, students will use their prior knowledge to inform their future decisions and help build their sense of place and connection to nature in the school community. Primary classes will experience a topic specific read-aloud and related activities. Junior classes will participate in a community walk designed to explore nature connections in the community.

All programming is curriculum-connected by grade. Programs are currently available for Kindergarten – Grade 6 classes.

Over and Under the Snow What lives above? What lives below? We’ll discover what’s under the snow. Animals and plants, senses galore. The winter landscape offers so much to explore. This program will include reading the book, “Over and Under the Snow” by Kate Messiner, as inspiration for activities, explorations and reflections. K winter
Have You Heard the Nesting Birds? Look down to the ground and up in the sky. There’s so much to learn about the birds nearby. The neighbourhood is full of sounds and sights. As birds of a feather, let’s take flight.

The Snow Knows How do animals survive the cold and the snow? They build and hide and keep on the go. Animals adapt and stay busy and make sure to stay in the know. Weeds Find a Way It’s been said that a weed is just an unloved flower, so full of beauty, strength, and power. In sidewalk cracks, crannies, and nooks, so much to explore if only you look.

Winter Trees Look up, look down. Look all around. Trees are here no matter the season. They all have a purpose, a reason for being. They don’t die in winter, some just drop their leaves. We call them deciduous or coniferous trees. This program will include reading the book, “Winter Trees”, a book by Carole Gerber, as inspiration for activities, explorations and reflections.

Neighbourhood Nature Home is where there’s habitat, just look around. There are plant and animal communities, all around town. A tree, a lawn, a hole in the ground, everywhere life can be found. This program is designed as a neighbourhood walk meant to connect curriculum and nature in the community.
