Job Status: Short-Term Contract: ASAP to November 29, 2026 with possibility of extension
Compensation: $28.52 (starting) to $34.70 per hour (plus 6% in vacation pay)

Hours of Work: 35 hours per week

The Upper Thames River watershed spans approximately 3,421 square kilometers and includes predominately rural landscapes, as well as the urban centers of London, Stratford, and Woodstock. We serve a diverse population of approximately 600,000 residents. Our Conservation Areas offer outdoor recreational opportunities that welcome people of all ages and backgrounds, helping to educate visitors and share conservation messages that support the health of our watershed.

Position Summary
The Land Management Assistant supports the maintenance, safety, and environmental management of London’s Environmentally significant Areas and other UTRCA properties. The role includes site and trail upkeep, invasive species control, hazard tree work, enforcement support, and public engagement to ensure natural areas remain safe and accessible for all visitors.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the day-to-day maintenance of seven Environmentally Significant Areas in the City of London and other UTRCA properties. Tasks may include grass cutting, garbage removal, supporting the signage program, trail pruning, and trail risk management inspections.
- Provide support in enforcing applicable legislation, policies, and regulations. Working alongside Provincial Offences Officers, responsibilities may include taking notes, maintaining notebooks, assisting in identifying potential infractions, and issuing verbal warnings when appropriate.
- Assist with the implementation of invasive species management practices, including herbicide application and mechanical removal methods.
- Under supervision, support the hazard tree program by marking hazard trees, helping with trail closures and public safety during operations, and exposure to chainsaw operations.
- Support the encroachment management program through documentation, removal of forts and debris, and boundary identification using maps, GPS, and monuments.
- Maintenance and construction of boardwalks, barricades and a variety of trail infrastructure.
- Participate in the completion and installation of capital projects as assigned.
- Maintain vehicles, tools, and equipment in accordance with UTRCA standards, and perform additional maintenance duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- A college diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in natural resource management, forestry, parks and recreation, or a related field is required.
- At least one year of experience in recreation or park operations, maintenance, forestry, or a related field.
- Experience operating a variety of power landscape and forestry equipment.
- Experience with chainsaw operation and herbicide application is considered an asset.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, which may involve periods of physical activity.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including occasional afternoons and/or weekends.
Certifications, Memberships, Licenses
- Valid Ontario Driver’s License and valid CPR/First Aid Certificate.
- Herbicide exterminator’s license is considered an asset.
- Chainsaw certification is considered an asset.
