Project Guidelines and Application

Subsurface P Placement

in No-Till and Strip Till Systems

The goal of this subcategory is to encourage subsurface placement of all phosphorus required for the crop.

Rates

  • $20/acre: For subsurface phosphorus placement
  • Maximum: $15,000 (750 acre)

The per acreage rate can only be applied once per field, annually.

Funding cannot be stacked with other funding programs.

This rate cannot be combined with manure application in the same funding year for the same crop.

Requirements

  • Field(s) must be in the Upper Thames watershed, with the exception of fields within the Municipality of South Huron, which are not eligible. View map here.
  • Crop Fertility Plan for each field prepared by a CCA, agronomist, or by the applicant using the AgriSuite Field Management tool. This can be an existing plan or prepared through the program.
  • Soil test results from the field within the past three years showing less than 50ppm BiCarb (Olsen P).
  • Phosphorus placement must be at least two inches below soil surface.
  • Must be in a no-till or strip-till system

Eligible Practices

  • Phosphorus applications between June 30th, 2026 – May 31st, 2027
  • Phosphorus fertilizer or manure injection or banding
  • Subsurface placement equipment, including:
    • No-till Planter with 2*2 band
    • Strip-till
    • Nutrient Placement Toolbars
    • Liquid Manure Low Disturbance Injection

Ineligible Practices

  • Fields with BiCarb (Olsen P) ≥ 50ppm
  • Applications of nitrogen
  • Application of <20 lbs/acre P2O5
  • Pop-up, in-furrow, on-the-seed applications
  • Broadcast and incorporated applications of phosphorus
  • Applications of P205 with wheat seed
  • Applications in systems with full width spring tillage
  • Only one application of P (manure or fertilizer) will be funded per crop (e.g. fall and spring applications ahead of corn on the same field are not eligible for two payments)

Prioritization

  • Fields in priority subwatersheds
  • Fields with erodible soils
  • Fields implementing new practices

Application and Review Process

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

Step 4

Applications are received

Applications undergo review; approvals are released

Work is completed as described on application

Submission for claims must include:

  • Soil sample results and crop fertility plans
  • Georeferences photos of:
    • Fertilizer being loaded
    • Fertilizer placement equipment (openers, coulters, etc.)
    • Applicator unit in each field on the day of application
  • Invoicing shows proof of fertilizer purchased/applied (date/field ID on invoice)

Step 5

Payment is issued to the farmer/applicant
