Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety (2024 Flood Event 4, Bulletin 1)

Issued April 2, 2024 at 1:00 pm; valid until April 5, 2024 at 12:00 pm

Weather forecasts are predicting a Colorado low pressure system will enter Southern Ontario today, bringing with it approximately 30 mm of rain in the Upper Thames River basin. Rain is expected to begin this afternoon and continue through tomorrow.

The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) does not expect significant flooding at this time; however, water levels are expected to rise over the week and there is potential for flooding of low-lying areas that are typically prone to flooding. Water levels will remain elevated throughout this week.

Parents and guardians are reminded to keep children and pets away from all watercourses. Banks adjacent to rivers and creeks are very slippery and, when combined with cold, fast-moving water, pose a serious hazard. Standing water can also present dangers. Do not attempt to drive through flooded roadways.

It is not safe to take shelter along riverbanks or in low lying areas that are prone to flooding.

The UTRCA’s flood control reservoirs at Fanshawe, Wildwood, and Pittock Conservation Areas will be operated to reduce downstream flooding. UTRCA officials are monitoring the situation and will report on any changing conditions if necessary.
