Watershed Field Assistant (Co-op)

Student Opportunity – Fall 2026

Job Status: Contract, Full-Time (Approximately September 8, 2026 – December 11, 2026)

Compensation: Grade 3 – $20.23 (starting) to $24.80 per hour (plus 4% in vacation pay)

Number of Positions: 1 new vacancy

Hours of Work: 35 hours per week

Location: Watershed Conservation Centre, 1424 Clarke Road London ON, N5V 5B9

The Watershed Field Assistant Student will help protect and improve watershed health by participating in environmental monitoring, restoration projects, and field-based research activities. This position offers valuable practical experience with fieldwork, data collection, mapping technologies, and environmental stewardship.

This position is funded through the Eco Canada wage subsidy program. Applicants must meet Eco Canada participant eligibility requirements, including being a Canadian citizen, Canadian permanent resident, or person with refugee status in Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct surface water quality monitoring at designated locations and project sites, including operating and maintaining monitoring equipment and collecting field data.
  • Support groundwater monitoring activities and data collection efforts.
  • Collect, organize, and enter field information into databases, spreadsheets, or other tracking systems.
  • Assist with aquatic ecosystem monitoring activities, including benthic and fish assessment program.
  • Contribute to the planning and delivery of stewardship, habitat enhancement, and watershed improvement projects.
  • Support forestry, restoration, and vegetation management activities, including maintaining research plots, site preparation, and ecological restoration projects throughout the watershed.
  • Use mapping and GIS tools, with training provided as needed, to support fieldwork, create maps, and help track watershed conditions and project progress.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited post-secondary program in Environmental Sciences, Resource Management, Biology, or similar field.
  • Applicants need to hold Canadian citizenship, Canadian permanent residency status, or Canadian refugee status, and to qualify as a participant through Eco-Canada.

Certifications, Memberships, Licenses

  • A valid Ontario Class G2 or G driver’s license required. The successful candidate must be able to travel to field sites across the watershed and transport field equipment as needed.

Essential Physical and Safety Requirements

  • Ability to safely handle and transport field equipment weighing up to 20kg.
  • Ability to work outdoors and navigate a variety of terrain and environmental conditions, including uneven or slippery ground and remote field locations.
