Climate Change Tree Trial Produces First Seed Crop (UTRCA weekly, November 5, 2021) The Oxford County Bur Oak Climate Change Trial is a partnership between the Forest Gene Conservation Association, Oxford County, and the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA). Memorial Forest programs continue through pandemic (UTRCA Weekly, October 8, 2021) The Memorial Forest program provides a natural, lasting tribute to loved ones. The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) is involved in five memorial forests across the watershed: London, St. Marys, Thames Centre, Thamesford/Zorra Township, and Woodstock. Last spring, UTRCA staff helped to establish a new memorial garden in Monkton in partnership with the Municipality of North Perth. This UTRCA property is located west of the Town of St. Marys, at 4695 Perth Road Line 5. The fields were seeded with a native tallgrass prairie mix in September 2020. Saturated Buffer to Protect Water Quality (UTRCA Weekly, September 17, 2021) One of the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority’s (UTRCA) strategic Environmental Targets is to establish and restore 1,500 hectares of natural vegetation cover, windbreaks, and buffers by 2037. To achieve this, staff work with landowners to target marginal lands, stream buffers, vulnerable farm fields, and other areas. Earlier this summer, the UTRCA installed a saturated buffer to protect water quality, on a property near St. Marys. Parents can register their children online now for the six week outdoor program, which is designed to provide safe, nature-based learning through play and exploration at Fanshawe Conservation Area.
