Thorndale Demonstration Farm (UTRCA Weekly, March 26, 2021) March 26, 2021 - The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) has established a new, 58 acre demonstration farm near Thorndale, Ontario. The farm will demonstrate various best management practices (BMPs) and showcase how they can improve soil health and local water quality. Staff expect that there will be widespread benefits, as farmers implement BMPs from the demonstration farm on their own property, and expand the positive impact across the watershed. The initiative took root, focusing efforts on a local park with garbage pick-ups, tree planting, and much more! The Glen Cairn Community Partners have been able to engage the community as they transformed this park, situated on a former landfill, with new playgrounds, benches, and improved trails. While the pandemic has put this [...]

Our River Safety program has reached more than 63,000 students, teaching them about the dangers posed by high, fast flowing water and slippery banks, as well as the hazards around dams, reservoirs, and ponds. This year, with the restrictions on classroom visits due to COVID-19, we had to rethink how to deliver this important program to watershed students. The [...]

Cover Crop Research (UTRCA Weekly, February 1, 2021)

Cover Crop Research (UTRCA Weekly, February 1, 2021) The UTRCA’s Conservation Services staff work with farmers across the watershed to help them implement a variety of agricultural best management practices. Since 2015, we’ve been working on a cover crop research project with approximately 20 landowners in the upper Medway Creek watershed, north of London. Thanks to new funding, we’ve been able to expand these efforts recently. Farmers can grow cover crops both before the main crop is planted and after it is harvested.
