Conservation Ontario Class Environmental Assessments

A Conservation Ontario Class Environmental Assessment (EA) is a structured, risk-based process used to evaluate and select a preferred solution for dam related projects.

The UTRCA uses Class EAs to help determine the most appropriate long-term direction for its dam infrastructure. Through this process, a range of alternatives are developed and carefully evaluated to identify the option that best balances archaeological, cultural, social, economic, and technical considerations.

Engagement is a key part of the EA process. The UTRCA works with a variety of interested parties, which may include members of the public, Indigenous communities, local interest groups, and environmental and recreational organizations. This collaborative approach helps ensure that final decisions are informed, transparent, and reflective of the communities we serve.

Duty to Consult

The UTRCA recognizes the Crown’s duty to consult First Nation communities when projects may have the potential to impact Aboriginal or Treaty rights. As part of the EA process, the UTRCA is committed to meaningful engagement with Indigenous communities to understand their interests, concerns, and knowledge related to a project.
